'The process of state formation in Yorubaland started at Ile-Ife where Oduduwa instituted a centralized system of civil administration centered on the monarch or Oba.
The structures of government were put in place, and according to Adediran, the Oduduwa political ingenuity became the archetype for all Yoruba kingdoms that derived from Ile-Ife.
The success of the Oduduwa experiment encouraged his princes to spread out in different directions, seizing political power from pre-existing groups and enforcing their own supremacy by establishing flourishing states with allegiance to Ile-Ife, which was regarded as orirun, the source.
The kingdoms of Owu, Oyo, Popo, Sabe, Ila (Igbomina), Ondo, Ijesha, Ekiti, Akure, Owo, Ijebu, Egba, Ketu and Idaisa emerged at different times to constitute the Yoruba complex of states.
Many other states are today claiming direct dynastic relationship with Oduduwa to legitimize their claims on the beaded crown, which is considered the most symbolic gift of Oduduwa to his children.
