Story of a secret treasure hunt in the Portugese African territory of Mozambique. Many years ago the author's husband unexpectedly came into possession of a map and first-hand information about a hoard of uncut diamonds buried about seventy years ago in the grave of an African chief

This is one of those slightly bonkers travel/adventure books that only an Englishwoman could write! Many years ago Margaret Lane's husband unexpectedly came into possession of a map and first-hand information about a hoard of uncut diamonds buried about seventy years ago in the grave of an African chief in the Portuguese African territory of Mozambique. The man who had first got wind of the treasure, a hard-bitten hunter and prospector who had spent many years in Africa, had made a search himself but had been defeated by malaria, dysentery and the difficulty of the country.

In 1958 that Margaret Lane and her husband decided to attempt their own expedition. Searching for treasure is a chancy business, liable to land the searcher on the wrong side of the law. In deciding to undertake an enterprise of this nature, the two of them knew that they would run considerable risk and have to work in secret. They had no knowledge of Africa and could ask for neither help nor advice.

Ostensibly on an innocent safari they set out in the spring of 1959, accompanied by an official presence they had not bargained for as well as by three Africans and an Alsation dog. This risky and off-beat adventure are described with can¬dour and jollity that is rarely pulished in English anymore.
