"THE AIM OF THIS BOOK is to provide stimuli which will encourage students to think precisely about what they read and write, to be accurate and sensitive in their use of language, and to appreciate creatively the different modes of thought and expression appropriate to particular literary genres. In order to achieve this aim, the author has selected a series of passages and poems, by African writers or about African environments, and has devised a range of questions on each. Both quotations and questions have been so chosen that a critical awareness of language and of the variety of its functions is developed, leading to the ability to pronounce a reasoned judgement on any piece of writing, be it a third rate newspaper article, a descriptive poem, a dramatic image or a political speech."
